Popular music voice teaching is a developing field shaped by diverse forms of expertise and multiple pathways into the profession. As it seeks professional recognition, questions arise about whose knowledge is valued and how professional practice responds to societal expectations.

This dissertation examines how professionalism is conceptualized and manifested in popular music voice teaching. Drawing on a systematic mapping review, a framework synthesis, and a multiple case study of higher education in Finland and Sweden, it explores the norms, institutional conditions, and professional relationships that shape the field.

The three studies portray professionalism as plural and context-dependent. Rather than continually expanding professional demands, the dissertation points to rethinking existing practices and priorities, fostering collaboration between practitioners with different expertise, and recognizing the ethical and societal dimensions of professional work.
